Inform the storage company if someone other than yourself will have access to the storage unit
Cover all furniture
- Disassemble (if possible) to make more efficient use of space
- Stand sofas on end minimize wasted space
- Place loose cushions in bags and use as filler between items
- Try moving dressers with contents in drawers to avoid repacking. Simply tape dresser drawers closed during moving
Place tables face down on floor with legs pointing towards ceiling
- Take care to protect finish of table with blanket or padding
- Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or blanket separating them
Wrap plates, bowls and china individually before placing in boxes
- Use dish saver boxes with dividers to ensure further protection
- Fill paper into empty spaces in boxes to prevent movement
- Cups and glasses can be nested (placed inside of each other) as long as wrapping paper divides the
Ensure appliances are defrosted and free of any moisture before storing
- Fridge and freezer doors should be kept slightly open to prevent odor build up
- Try using valuable storage space inside appliances for more efficient use of space

Avoid over-filling boxes with heavy items, such as books
Use file boxes to keep important documents organized
Use wardrobe boxes to avoid excessive wrinkling of clothes
Label all boxes to ensure items are located easily
- Mark “Fragile” on all boxes containing pictures, mirrors, or other delicate items
Store items that you may require periodically in a location that makes them easy to get at, close to the door of the unit
Do not store combustibles such as fuel, propane, or paints
